Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes will gain the right to contest specific calls made by the official, mirroring the system already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
